Info about 2014 Communication Central speakers

Here’s a little info about some of speakers at “Be a Better Freelancer! (Re)Invent Your Business,” the 2014 “Build Your Business” Conference of Communication Central – and this is only part of the line-up!

Jake Poinier
Keynoter Jake “Dr. Freelance” Poinier (DearDrFreelance.com, MoreCowbellBooks.com, BoomvangCreative.com) is the owner of Phoenix-based Boomvang Creative Group and author of The Science, Art and Voodoo of Freelance Pricing and Getting Paid and Help! My Freelancers Are Driving Me Crazy: 12 Keys to Driving Loyalty and Results from Your Creative Workforce, which won a 2013 Writer’s Digest Nonfiction eBooks Award. A graduate of Yale University, he started in the magazine business at Golf Digest. He moved to Phoenix in 1992 to become managing editor of Golf Illustrated and subsequently an editor and publisher at McMurry, a custom- and syndicated-magazine publisher.
Since going full-time freelance in 1999, Poinier has written marketing and advertising copy for national corporations and has published feature articles in USAToday, Ritz-Carlton Magazine, Blue Water Sailing and Speaker, to which he is a regular contributor. He served as editor for The Mental Game of Poker, Get Your Golf On! and the National Speakers Association’s Paid to Speak and Speak More. In addition to writing his own books, he has ghostwritten two.

Ben Davis
Benjamin (Ben) Russell Davis has been an instructor for more than 12 years for Fairfax County, Northern Virginia Community College and InSource Solutions, teaching a variety of subjects such as math, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office and manufacturing software. He has an undergraduate in economics and a master’s degree in systems engineering, and is also a Microsoft Certified Trainer. At a Communication Central conference in Baltimore, his workflow organizational tools – as described by April Michelle Davis – wowed the crowd.

April Michelle Davis is the owner of Editorial Inspirations (www.editorialinspirations.com), conducts audio conferences and is the author of “A Guide for the Freelance Indexer,” published by the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA). She was named the social media marketing expert of the National Association for Independent Writers and Editors and the 2013–2014 chair of American Society for Indexing Mid-South Atlantic Chapter.
April Michelle has a master’s degree in publishing from George Washington University; certificates in editing and book publishing (University of Virginia) and a certificate in professional editing (EEI Communications); and a bachelor’s degree in English from Messiah College.
Her Editorial Inspirations business provides editing, indexing and proofreading services to both publishers and authors. Through the business, she teaches classes on editing and indexing.

Ally Machate
Ally E. Machate (www.ambitiousenterprises.com, www.allymachate.com) debuted “Self-Publishing from Both Sides” at the 2013 Communication Central conference. She has given presentations on writing and publishing at the Maryland Writers Conference, League of Utah Writers Roundup, Florida Writers Conference, Bay to Ocean Writing Conference, Federal Women’s Training Program and more. Until recently, she also taught writing classes to adults two community college Lifelong Learning programs.
Ally has more than 14 years of experience in the publishing industry, including acquiring and editing books for Touchstone Fireside, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. She has been a freelance editor, writer and publishing consultant full-time since 2004 and has published articles on writing in The Writer magazine and the 2009 Writer’s Digest Guide to Literary Agents. She also has ghostauthored nonfiction books, including High Style (Chronicle Books, 10/08) and My Prevention Health Organizer (Prevention Books, 6/10). Her latest project, Way of the SEAL, for which she is the credited coauthor, was released from Reader’s Digest Books in December 2013.

Erin Brenner-2011 Communication Central speaker
Erin Brenner has been a publishing professional for 18 years, working in a variety of media. For Copyediting, she is editor of the bimonthly newsletter, writes for the blog and facilitates audio conferences.
Erin also runs her Right Touch Editing business, writes for Visual Thesaurus and teaches copyediting for the UCSD Extension School. Her sessions on editing resources and social media mastery have been popular at Communication Central events and conferences of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES).

Former research consultant Daniel Heuman is managing director of Intelligent Editing Ltd. and designed and developed PerfectIt, an add-in for MS Word that finds difficult-to-locate mistakes. Although originally intended for consultancies, PerfectIt has proved popular with editors, and is now used by almost 100 members of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders in the United Kingdom, as well as members of the Editorial Freelancers Association and Copy Editing List, many participants in past Communication Central conferences, and more.
